Observations

During the past few days I've had the chance to view events back home through different eyes. Here's some of my conclusions:

If a person who speaks two languages is bi-lingual, and a person who speaks three or more is multi-lingual, what do you call a person who only speaks one language? An American. Or British, or Canadian. :-)

Many people who watch American television shows think it's an accurate representation of life in America. That's really scary.

The Democratic National Convention has attracted a lot of attention. Mostly because they think both parties are out to lunch/up in the night/out of touch/totally whacked. Pick one. It's providing a great source of humor over here.

Madonna's statement comparing John McCain to Adolph Hitler has also caught a lot of people's attention. Mostly because they think Madonna's probably not sure who Hitler was, much less how he can accurately be compared to John McCain. A someone here observed, "Just because you a famous and have lots of photographers follow you around doesn't mean you aren't stupid."

And after all, isn't if fun to see how stupid other people can be?

What's In A Name?

In this case, nothing really. It's just that TBWAIN is more interesting than Jeff Svare's Blog . The content isn't going to change, 'cuz it's my blog. But the name was dull. Boring. Unimaginative. And, I was tired of it. Next week, I'm going to the Computers in Libraries Conference in Washington, D.C. It's always a great conference, and I feel really fortunate that I'm able to go again. It's a real idea factory, and I always come away recharged with new ideas. This year I'm hoping to get a chance to further discuss content management ideas for libraries and information organizations. The unofficial wiki for the conference has some good stuff posted. Lots of seasoned conference-goers have shared their insights on how to help your conference experience be a great one.

In a very short time you will know EVERYTHING!

Thus spake J.K. Rowling on Wednesday, 18 July, whilst imploring Potter fans not to breach the secrecy surrounding Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows . At midnight on the 21st, all will be revealed, and we will all know it together. I have to admit it, I'm more than a little intrigued by this story. My kids have sucked me into the mythos, and I want to know what happens! But, I'm staying firm on my resolve to wait. Even though I work at a bookstore, and we all want to know, the seals on the boxes are intact! We've been wondering what's being depicted on the banner we have in the store. It shows Harry and Voldemort in some kind of area, being watched by hooded figures who may be Death Eaters. Harry is looking up with his left hand upraised, and Voldemort's arms are outstretched and he doesn't appear to be looking at Harry. We think we know what's going on. It's a Quidditch Death Match.
